WHO WE ARE
Whenua Fit
Whenua Fit is a CrossFit gym, where strength, movement, fitness and culture form the core of everything we do. It's a whare that nurtures holistic wellbeing - physical, mental, social, and spiritual growth - guided by the principles of Hauora Tapa Whā. Our vision is to merge fitness and culture, creating a welcoming, inclusive space (hapori) that inspires connection, growth, and a new model of wellness.

OUR NAME
Whenua means both land and placenta. It is the spiritual and physical connection between Māori and the land. The land is seen as the mother figure, Papatūānuku from which all life originates. The placenta is the life force which provides sustenance to our bodies and our babies from the womb.

OUR IDENTITY
Our Pounamu logo weaves together symbolism and story. The pikorua twist represents enduring bonds, loyalty, and the connection between +64Fitness and Whenua Fit, constantly moving forward together. The lower hei matau (fish hook) honors Māui and the ocean as a source of life, while the koru in the negative space reflects new life, growth, strength, and balance between progress and tradition. The taura, or plaited cord, completes the necklace and represents the intertwined pathways of life, people, and experience.

OUR STORY
Whenua Fit was created by us – Komihana Mitchell (Komi) and Nicole Stowers (Tolz), both super passionate about CrossFit, strength, conditioning, sports, health, and fitness. As accomplished athletes with experience in representative rugby, volleyball, touch rugby, and international-level powerlifting, Olympic lifting and CrossFit, we bring both expertise and heart to everything they do.
For 10 years, we ran +64 Fitness, New Zealand’s best-performing CrossFit gym, helping countless athletes achieve personal bests and even compete at the CrossFit Games. Now with Whenua Fit, we’re starting a new chapter close to our hearts: a gym that blends elite CrossFit training with Māori and Pasifika values, creating a space where people can grow stronger, move with purpose, and belong to a supportive community.
Whenua Fit offers classes in both English and Te Reo Māori, and kids classes that teach movement, confidence, and teamwork from a young age – helping the next generation of whānau thrive.
